When Luke woke up on Friday, he came walking down the hall and said, "It's my birthday. Can I open some presents?" I said, "yes, but go wake up daddy first." It was the cutest thing - he walked in our bedroom, crawled up onto the bed, and said, "Daddy, it's my birthday. Do you want to watch me come open my present?" I mean - who could turn down that sweet request?
We let Luke open one present from us - he opened Sam the Scooper play-doh truck. This small toy ended up giving Luke and I hours of fun. We played with Sam until around 9:00am. By that time, we were hungry so Landis, Luke, and I headed to Cracker Barrel for breakfast together. We enjoyed our time together as a family. We let Luke pick out one small toy in the Cracker Barrel toy store and then we stopped by Fancy Pastry in Lexington. We picked up a small cake to celebrate with that evening and I let Luke pick out the cake that he wanted for his birthday party with his friends (the next week).
After we left Fancy Pastry, we dropped Daddy off at home and Luke and I headed to Memaw' house for some play time. The wind was blowing - it was freezing cold outside but Luke sure didn't care - we bundled him up, bundled ourselves up, and outside we went for some 4 wheeler driving. Luke drove and drove his 4 wheeler while the girls chased him on their scooters. Finally, we all came back inside to warm up and Luke played with Lexi and Lauren upstairs in the playroom. He had a blast - so much so that he didn't want to leave. The only way we convinced him to leave was by promising him that we would eat lunch at Chick Fil A.
Mom, Lexi, Lauren, Luke and I ate at Chick Fil A. The kids meal included a Franklin book and Luke loves these books so Memaw spent some time during lunch reading Luke his Franklin book - it was very sweet.
After lunch, Luke and I went to Wal-Mart to pick up a few groceries and while in there, I let him pick out one toy. He chose a tall Chuck racing tower. He couldn't wait to get home to play with it. However, on the way home - he fell asleep. But....never fear....as soon as he woke up, he begged - can I get out my Chuck tower now? Of course, birthday boy! :) We put together his tower and played with it together until Papa Donnie showed up with another birthday present - it was a Construction Quarry that used Chuck cars. So....we spread out all of Luke's Chuck garages and towers and trucks and played and played together.
Before long, it was time to celebrate with Papa Dale and Mammaw Carolyn. Luke was born on Mammaw Carolyn's birthday so we always make sure that we all have a chance to celebrate together. Luke opened several more presents from Papa Dale and Mammaw Carolyn and one more present from me and Landis. He ended up with Mickey Mouse car wash, a rug that had roads on it and street signs, and a HUGE Chuck that does tricks (like tumbling and flipping). Of all the presents he received that day, Chuck was his favorite! Chuck talks to you as you play him so Luke would get down next to Chuck and talk back to him in this tiny sweet voice. It was adorable! Chuck joined us at the dinner table for potato soup and then he also joined us to sing Happy Birthday and eat cake. Luke loved hearing us sing Happy Birthday to him but he sure did struggle to play out his candles - it was so cute watching him get frustrated! Here's the video of Luke and Mammaw's birthday song....my favorite comment, "That stinking candle won't stop." :)
After dinner and cake, Luke played with Chuck and his other truck toys in the floor with Papa Dale. It was such a sweet moment - Papa Dale and Luke played in the floor while Landis played his guitar and we watched the CMA Christmas show. It was such a peaceful time of celebration! Around 9:45pm, it was time for everyone to leave and Luke was having so much fun that he begged for more play time. We had to say, "no" but let him take Chuck with him to bed. In bed, we watched one lawn mower race on the computer and then, finally, with Chuck beside of him, Luke fell asleep. As I lay there watching his perfect face sleep so soundly, I thanked the Lord for the most wonderful 3 years of my life and prayed for the next year to be just as wonderful. It was a perfect day - simply perfect.
