I had planned on waiting until I was completely done with work, which is the end of this upcoming week. I had planned all along to start out our summer bucket list with POTTY TRAINING! But, this morning, Luke and I were reading his book that we have read 100 times called, "It's Potty Time!" In the book, the baby bear wears big boy underwear and holds his stuffed animal named Barnaby. Luke decided that he wanted a Barnaby, so, I looked through his TON of stuffed animals and found a sock monkey that looked like Barnaby. He then told me that he was ready to wear big boy underwear. I took his lead and put him some real underwear on. We started with Buzz Lightyear underwear. With his big boy underwear on, he continued to play. About 10 minutes later, he said, "Mommy, I need to go to the potty." I said, "Ok" but when I turned around, I saw that he had already pee peed on the floor and in his underwear. I reassured him that this was okay and I took him to the potty (which was sitting in the living room). I reminded him that this same thing happened to baby bear in the book - sometimes we have accidents. I told him to let Mommy know the next time he had that funny pee pee feeling. The next pair of underwear was Rex the dinosaur. Once again, Luke continued playing. I set the kitchen timer for 15 minutes (thinking that I would sit him down on the potty again at that time to make sure he didn't have another accident). Well, with 2 minutes left on the timer, Luke says, "Mommy, I need to go to the potty." I hurriedly looked at him to see, once again, the pee pee on the floor and in his underwear. I, again, reassured him that this was okay and he sat on the potty while we talked about it again. No pee pee had yet to land in the potty.
I then put his third pair of underwear on. At this point, he was hungry and wanted a snack. His request was macaroni and cheese (his ultimate favorite lately). I, again, set the timer, but, this time, for 10 minutes while I made his macaroni. His macaroni finished and his timer went off. I tried to encourage him to go sit on his potty and try to pee pee so that he didn't have an accident while he was eating his macaroni. He had no desire to sit on the potty because evidently he was starving. So, he sat in Daddy's chair and ate his macaroni. About half way through the bowl, he said, "Mommy, I need to go to the potty." I looked down and there was pee pee in his underwear - just a tiny bit. Again, I took him to the potty and we talked about how he must tell me when he has the feeling that he has to pee pee so that we can get to the potty BEFORE he pee pees. We changed his underwear AGAIN.
He finished up his macaroni and then wanted to watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. Several times during Mickey Mouse, he told me that he had to go to the potty. Each time, he was dry. I would still let him go sit on the potty as long as he wanted. He sat on the potty 3 or 4 times during the 20 minute episode of Mickey Mouse.
After Mickey Mouse went off, I told him that we had to go to Wal-Mart. I put a pull-up on him and told him that it was big boy underwear. I told him not to wet those and that if he needed to go to the potty in Wal-Mart to tell me. At Wal-Mart, I rushed and got groceries as fast as we could. We were probably there about 45 minutes. As soon as we got home, I asked if he needed to use the potty, he said, "no." I let him go play in the backyard with his lawn mower while I unloaded the groceries. He asked me to bring both of his lawn mowers outside. I brought one of them out and then went back inside to get the 2nd one. When I came back out, he looked at me and said, "Mommy, I need to go potty." I thought for sure that the pull up would be wet, but to my surprise, it was DRY! We pulled his pants down, sat him down on the potty, and he PEE PEED in the potty!!!! It was a lot of pee pee too! He must have held it for over an hour. I celebrated with a very energetic potty dance right then! I told him over and over how proud I was of him! Then, I let him stand up and look at his pee pee. He was amazed and then told me that I needed to go pee pee too. After I pee peed and he got excited for me, I showed him how to dump his pee pee in the big potty and then flush. I hugged his neck 100 times telling him how proud I was of him!!
I told him that we had to call Memaw right then because she would be so excited! I dialed the number and gave him the phone. As soon as mom answered, Luke said, "I pee peed in the potty." My mom was super excited - so excited that she was at our house within 15 minutes so she could show Luke her potty dance! He loved the dance so much that he was singing the words later while riding his lawn mower.
Soon after this exciting event, Luke laid down for a nap and he is sound asleep now. I cannot wait to see how our afternoon goes. I have some clean big boy underwear ready for him! I have to work 4 days next week so I'm going to encourage Carolyn to keep working with him consistently and then of course, we will continue working on the potty training all summer. Because Luke understood to hold his pee pee while we were in Wal-Mart, I think he understands the concept. He did not stinky this morning, which is unusual for him so I'm hoping that he is not holding that because he's concerned about the stinky in the potty part - we will continue working on that. We have a long way to go but I am hopeful that we will see quick progress.
In the meantime, I apologize for my late posting - I have a TON of pictures (like almost 100) to post from several exciting events that have happened in the last 2 weeks. Stay tuned for a post that will include the following - Sesame Street Live Show, Memorial Day Celebrations, and My Brother's Wedding at the Beach! I have been super busy closing out the school year and have also had several other video/picture things to catch up on - I hope to post the LONG blog that I mentioned above later this weekend or early next week so STAY TUNED!
To all my educator friends, CONGRATS on the end of another school year. I know you are super excited just as I am to have over 2 months at home with your families. Nothing beats that luxury! I am ecstatic!!!
See you soon!

(Just for fun, I posted some pictures of Luke in his diaper from December 2011! Even though those diaper bottoms are cute as pie, I'm ready to see some big boy underwear pictures!)
UPDATE: It's now Sunday morning, Day 2 of Potty Training. After his first ever pee pee in the potty, he continued to do great yesterday. After his nap, we went straight to the pool so he had a swimmie diaper on for a few hours. He did, to my surprise, ask me to use the potty while he was playing in the pool. I took him to the bathroom but he was nervous and scared and didn't want to use the big potty in that dark bathroom. When we got back home, I put big boy underwear and his regular shorts on him. I reminded him several times to tell Mommy when he needed to use the potty. Luke wanted to push and ride his lawn mowers so we headed outside. I put the potty on the back porch so that we would have quick access. Luke was pushing his lawn mower all the way at the far end of my dad's house and all of a sudden, he grabbed his little private area and said, "I need to go potty." I picked him and the lawn mower up as quick as I could and took him to the potty on the back porch. We pulled his pants down, he sat down, and there it was PEE PEE IN THE POTTY! :) Daddy was home this time so he joined me in doing the potty dance! Luke grinned from ear to ear. We gave some high 5's and then Luke was back to mowing. I could not believe that he stopped playing in order to use the potty - that's impressive. We will continue working today! :)
I have one big concern - Luke never did a stinky yesterday which is highly unusual for him. I think he's holding it because he doesn't know what to expect with trying to stinky in the potty. I may let him stinky in a diaper today if he continues to hold it because I don't want him to get a belly ache.
As always - I will keep you posted!
